Laura Heykamp | Female Development Coordinator | femaledevelopment@crestonvalleyminorhockey.com |
This program and initiative, funded and supported by CVMHA and BC Hockey, aims to help female youth of all ages and stages learn and play hockey in an all-female player environment. Locally, we host 3 to 4 ice times per month (for up to two separate groups) on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays from October through March.
On Hockey Canada's FAQ page for women's and girls' hockey, a female hockey development manager from Hockey Canada states:
"The benefits of females playing female hockey are reflected on both the skill development and the social aspect of the game. It is important for girls to have the opportunity to interact with teammates and be leaders on their teams. The skill level of female hockey has increased dramatically and girls today have the opportunity to compete at a high level and still benefit from the social and leadership side of the game as well."
For female players seeking to enhance their skills and pursue higher-level opportunities, participating in all-female practices or games provides more chances to get ice time, handle the puck, shoot often, skate on penalty kills, or join the power play. This setting enables players to develop their individual skills more effectively in game-like conditions compared to limited ice time on a traditional mixed team.
All players - regardless of experience, skill level, or purpose - bond through hockey and build lasting friendships. The community created offers unique benefits, such as:
In Creston, we strive to create a welcoming environment where both newcomers and seasoned players can come together to have fun, enhance their skills, and form lasting friendships. Players have the option to participate in enjoyable scrimmages with local and regional teams, take part in all-female tournaments such as WickFest, and potentially join an all-female league with other East Kootenay (EK) or West Kootenay (WK) teams in the future. Our primary goal is to support your development and ensure everyone has an enjoyable experience!
Since the 2018/19 season, Laura Heykamp has been the local Female Development (FD) Coordinator.
Laura is both a mother of three minor hockey players and an experienced player herself. Having finished her playing career with the University of Guelph Gryphons (OUA / U SPORTS) many years ago, she now shares her knowledge and experience with young female athletes eager to learn. Laura's background allows her to give back to the game and succeed as a coach or mentor.
Off the ice, Laura focuses on building relationships with other female leaders in the region. This helps support families and players looking to broaden their hockey experience into different areas, often gaining exposure to higher levels of competition.
As the program progresses, Laura encourages other parents, coaches, and experienced players to support and possibly (co)lead the female initiative. More opportunities for female athletes to pursue their playing careers depend on a community of leaders and supporters to attract and retain women and girls in this wonderful sport.
